Ralph Scott was born at Yokefleet on the 31st of March 1789 and baptised at Laxton that April — a son of Solomon Scott, the parish clerk of Blacktoft, and his wife Mary Lilly. He is the last of his line to stand a rung above a labourer.
On the 25th of November 1812 he married, at Howden, Elizabeth Holliday of Thorpe Lidgett. The register, read at the image this pass, calls him plainly a 'Husbandman' — a small tenant farmer — and both bride and groom made their marks; the vicar Ralph Spofforth married them by banns, before Edward Palmer, a name that recurs at these Scott weddings. Fourteen years on, when his daughter Hannah was baptised in 1826, the register still enters the parents 'of Caville, Farmer'. He and Elizabeth had a large family at Cavil and Eastrington — a dozen children by Janet Brock's reckoning of the registers — and buried several of them small: an infant Thomas in 1816, a two-year-old Ralph in 1819, and in one hard year, 1834, both a baby son John and an eight-year-old daughter Hannah. Among the children who lived were George, who would carry the line, and Holliday, who wore his mother's maiden name.
By the 1841 census Ralph had come down to agricultural labour, at Thorpe Lidgett; in 1851 he was there still, his son George's household the next door along. He was buried at Howden on the 19th of March 1857. His widow Elizabeth lived on another eighteen years — her own page tells it. Through his son George, and George's daughter Annie, Ralph Scott's line runs down to the Harrisons, the Drewerys and the Brocks.

His marriage to Elizabeth Holliday (Howden, 1812) is read at the register image this pass — the entry that catches him a 'Husbandman', the family's high-water mark before the slide to agricultural labour. His baptism (Laxton 1789), the 1826 'Farmer' baptism note, both censuses and his burial (1857) rest on Janet's transcripts.
