Solomon Scott

1756 – 1822
✓ Validated against records · 2026-07-09

Solomon Scott was baptised at Blacktoft, on the north bank of the Ouse, on the 19th of December 1756 — the youngest of the children Janet Brock lists for Ralph Scott of Blacktoft and his wife Sarah Bradley. He is the one man in this line the records let us call literate: he became the parish clerk of Blacktoft, the reading-and-writing office at the centre of a small riverside parish.

In 1785 he married Mary Lilly, and the children came — baptised, as the family moved along the Ouse and the levels, variously at Blacktoft and at Laxton: Edward and then Ralph, the son who would carry the line, in the 1780s; and after them a run of losses, an infant Solomon in 1792, a baby John in 1796, a four-month-old Isabella in 1802, each buried small. Faith, Mary and Rhoda lived.

A directory of 1823 still set down his name and office — 'Solomon Scott Parish Clerk' of Blacktoft — though he had died the year before: he was buried at Blacktoft on the 22nd of October 1822, aged 65. The literacy he held did not survive him in the working line; his grandson George, an agricultural labourer at Cavil, would sign his marriage with a mark. Through his son Ralph, and Ralph's son George, Solomon Scott's line runs down to the Scotts of Cavil, and so to the Drewerys and the Brocks.

Solomon Scott — the parish clerk

Research · Blacktoft, on the Ouse

His whole life rests on Janet's readings of the Blacktoft and Laxton registers — baptism 1756, marriage to Mary Lilly 1785, a family baptised along the Ouse, burial 1822 — with the parish-clerk office recorded in a directory of 1823. Nothing here is re-read at the image this pass; the Blacktoft register (older format) is the upgrade path.

  • The clerk's own hand. As parish clerk he would have written up Blacktoft's registers for years — his signature and entries are findable in the Blacktoft books (Borthwick Institute / East Riding Archives), a satisfying image-level confirmation for a round two.
  • Mary Lilly. His wife's origins are unknown — a name without a line.
  • The directory. Confirming the exact directory (Baines 1823 vs Bulmer) and reading the entry would lift the parish-clerk fact off Mum-level.
