George Scott

1819 – 1898
✓ Validated against records · 2026-07-09

George Scott was a Thorpe Lidgett man and an agricultural labourer from first to last. He was baptised at Eastrington on the 10th of January 1819 — born at Cavil, the fourth child of Ralph Scott, a husbandman of Cavil, and Elizabeth Holliday — and in 1841, before his marriages, the census catches him out at service, a farm servant to Alfred Kepton at Bubwith.

He married twice, and buried too many children. In December 1843 he married, at Howden, Hannah Revell of Hatfield — a waterman's daughter — both of them making their marks; they had three children — Richard, Thomas and George — and buried two of them young: the baby Thomas in 1846, and George at seven in 1855 (Richard's trail runs out after his baptism). Hannah herself died in the summer of 1854, her burial reading 'wife of George Scott of Thorpe aged 29'. That November, a widower of Thorpe Lidgett, he married again at Howden: Mary Ann Stainley of the same hamlet. The register — read at the image this pass — has them both making their marks, his father entered as Ralph Scott, labourer, hers as George Stanley, labourer, and the wedding witnessed by John Calvert, who married George's sister Mary. Their daughter Annie Elizabeth, born in 1860, would carry the line.

The censuses hold him fast to the one place. Thorpe Lidgett in 1851 with Hannah and their boy, his parents Ralph and Elizabeth the next house along; Thorpe Lidgett again in 1861 with the infant Annie; Newfields in 1871, a household three generations deep, his widowed father-in-law George Stainley under the roof and his brother Holliday Scott next door. There is a quiet fall in the family's fortunes behind him: his grandfather Solomon had been the parish clerk of Blacktoft, and his own father a husbandman with land at Cavil, but George worked for wages and signed with a mark.

He was buried at Howden on the 8th of March 1898, aged 79 — and Mary Ann followed him within two days, the old couple dying almost together after more than forty years. Through their daughter Annie, and her marriage into the Harrisons, George Scott's Howdenshire line runs down to the Drewerys and the Brocks.

Research · Cavil, Thorpe Lidgett & Newfields

His second marriage (1854, Mary Ann Stainley) is read at the register image this pass — both making their marks, both fathers named — and the 1861 and 1871 censuses at the enumeration image. His baptism (Eastrington 1819), first marriage (Hannah Revell 1843) and burial (1898) rest on Janet's transcripts; the East-Riding registers behind them are the Treasure House upgrade path.

  • The 1841 & 1851 censuses at the image. A cheap upgrade next time the census sets are open — 1851 in particular, which sets his first family beside his parents.
  • His first wife's line. Hannah/Ann Revell of Hatfield (bap. 10 October 1825, father Thomas Revell, waterman) is built on this page as a first marriage; her Revell family at Hatfield is untouched — a wife-line for another day.
  • The children's graves. The baby Thomas (1846), George (at seven, 1855) and the first Ralph of the second marriage (an infant, 1855) are on Mum's page; the Howden burial register would fix the dates. Richard (1842) simply drops from the record after his baptism — his fate untraced.
