Incompetent and overturned the boat. Not able to swim and sank. The other two men succeeded in getting hold of the boat.....until rescued........ Two men of the names of Henry Penrose of Middle Water Lane and John Fowler on hearing of the melancholy event proceeded to the spot with creepers etc and the deceased was taken out of the water in about ten minutes but life was extinct as he had been immersed for about three quarters of an hour. LAMENTABLE DEATH BY DROWNING IN YORK 'On Sunday afternoon last considerable excitement was created in the neighbourhood of Lendal ferry by the discovery of the body of Mr. John Anderson, Head Clerk at the York and North Midland engineering works, in the River Ouse by four persons named Thomas Franks, Thomas Air, Henry Penrose and John Deighton who had been engaged to drag the river for him as he had been missing since the previous Thursday night. Some hundreds of persons assembled on both sides of the river to catch a glimpse of the corpse or talk over the untimely end of the deceased. A door having been procured, the body was placed upon it and it was removed to Mrs. Jackson, the Leopard Inn, Coney Street to await the coroner's inquisition.'

DEATH BY BURNING 'On Monday last an inquest was held before J.P.Wood Esq. on view of the body of Henry Penrose, the son of a stone sawyer, residing in Garder Place in this city. It seems that the deceased, who was two years old, had been temporarily left in the house on Saturday morning by its mother with a brother and sister of the respective ages of five years and four years. On her return in about ten minutes she found the child's clothes burning and his little brother endeavouring to extinguish them with his hands and a piece of iron and taking them off. She screamed out and a neighbour named Lilly came to her aid, whereupon the deceased was undressed and taken to the County Hospital where certain remedial measures were resorted to. Deceased, who was much burnt about the chest and arms, was afterwards removed home and attended by Mr. North, surgeon, but the injuries were of such nature that death resulted in twenty four hours after the occurrence, which according to the little boys statement, had taken place from the deceased lighting a piece of paper and playing with it on the floor. Verdict: "Accidently burnt" '
