Alice Houlton

1859 – 1934
✓ Validated against records · 2026-07-07

Alice Houlton was born on 4 June 1859 in the parish of St Mary, Hull — a shoemaker's daughter, a child of John Houlton's third marriage, to Mary Ann Temperton, and the one through whom this line runs on. Mum recorded the June date, and the record backs her in an unusual way: when Alice was finally brought to church ten years later, the clerk of St Mary's Lowgate wrote her birth date into the margin of the baptism register, so the register itself testifies to the day.

Her childhood moved between the courts off the Old Town streets, always within a few hundred yards of her father's shoemaking work: at two she is on the census at 11 Winter Alley, at twelve at James Place — the next court along — a scholar in a household of eight. On 28 November 1869, aged ten, she was 'Received into the Church' at St Mary's, Lowgate, alongside her little brother Albert: the register's phrase means she had been privately baptised as a baby and was now publicly received, one of a small batch the vicar John Scott regularised that day. No register of the private baptism has been found.

In 1877 she married Samuel David Frith at St Mary's, Lowgate — the church of her own late baptism — and the Houlton line passed into the Frith spine. Her son Samuel David, born in 1884, carries it down to the present family. She died in the spring of 1934, on the Drypool side of the river, aged 74.

Both bride and groom signed. The groom's "21" runs a year ahead of the font date of March 1857 — the same habit his son would repeat. Our research

What this pass could not settle, and where it would be settled:

  • Her private baptism. The 1869 St Mary's entry says 'Received into the Church' — so Alice was privately baptised as a baby, but no register of it has been found (Yorkshire Baptisms, 1859±2: nothing). Likely a home baptism never separately registered; a Hull-registers trawl at Hull History Centre could close it.
  • Albert's birth date. The 1869 register margin reads Jan 14 1867 for her brother Albert; Mum's page says February 14th 1867. His GRO birth certificate (Q1 1867, Hull) would settle it — a purchase, low priority (sibling, not spine).
  • Annie's adult baptism. Mum records sister Annie baptised 11 Dec 1895, aged 33 — worth reading at the register when St Mary's 1895 pages are next open; possibly connected to a marriage.
