Harriet Wainman was baptised at Laxton on the 21st of April 1833, the youngest of the eleven children of David Wainman — born at Hive, by Gilberdyke — and Elizabeth Bowler of Gilberdyke. The Wainmans had been Laxton people for a generation: her ten brothers and sisters were christened there and at Eastrington across twenty-three years, and the 1841 census packs the household tight around their labourer father.
At eighteen she was house servant in John Hill's farmhouse on Front Street — where the farm servant was a young man from the Eight and Forty named Woodall Harrison. They married at Howden Minster that September, 1851, she a minor, her mark beside his; and the rest of her record is the long middle of a labouring marriage: ten children at Laxton between 1852 and 1873, the first dead in his first month, the last — Charlotte — at a year old. In her sixties the house filled again: the 1891 census finds her and Woodall raising three of their son John's children on Howden Road, and beside them Mary Hannah's Dewsbury-born daughter, a second Charlotte, brought up as their own.
She died on the 25th of November 1907 at her daughter Ann Elizabeth Waldock's house in Laxton, and was buried at Laxton three days later, aged seventy-four — exactly the age her font date gives her. The Hull Daily Mail carried the family's notice: "Harriett, the beloved wife of William Woodall Harrison."
