Mary Waters/Walters

1794 – 1878
✓ Validated against records · 2026-07-08

Mary Waters was baptised at Ludford Magna, on the edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds, on 26 October 1794 — a daughter of John Waters and Elizabeth Hornsey. In June 1814 she married Christopher Stubbs and came down into the Marsh, first to North Cockerington and then to Alvingham.

She was the mother of a large family — a dozen children between 1815 and 1839 — and the wife of a 200-acre farmer; the censuses set her at Alvingham and, in old age, at West Ashby. She outlived her husband by three years, dying in 1878 — the same year that carried off her son Joseph. Her maiden name comes down to us unsettled: Waters, Walters, or the marriage register's own "Wautars" — a spelling for a round-two leaf to fix.

Mary Waters of Ludford Magna

Research · Ludford Magna, Lincolnshire

Her Ludford Magna baptism (1794) and parents — John Waters and Elizabeth Hornsey — come from Janet Brock's research; her marriage is confirmed in the FamilySearch index, where the surname is given as "Waters or Wautars." Still to do (round two): read the Ludford Magna baptism and the Alvingham marriage register leaves to settle the maiden name (Waters / Walters / Wautars) and confirm the Waters and Hornsey lines; and her 1878 death and burial at the image (Janet's page gives her age as 85, though an October 1794 baptism reads nearer 84).
