Eliza Stubbs

1831 – 1907
✓ Validated against records · 2026-07-08
Mum's page title spelled her 'Eliza Stubs' (one b); her siblings' lists, the family, and her own 1830 baptism register all read 'Stubbs'. The primary name is unified to Stubbs so she groups with her family on the tree; 'Stubs' is kept as a noted variant.

Eliza Stubbs was baptised at North Cockerington, in the Lincolnshire Marsh, on 12 September 1830 — a daughter of Christopher Stubbs, farmer of 200 acres at Alvingham, and Mary Waters of Ludford. She grew up one of a large family on the farm; the 1841 and 1851 censuses set her down there, a farmer's daughter at home.

In April 1852, at the Wesleyan chapel in Louth, she married George Brock, a young miller from the Isle of Axholme, and went with him to Tetney on the coast, where he took his own corn mill. There they raised eight children — William Henry among them — until, in January 1869, George died of smallpox at forty-four, and the widow could not keep the mill.

Within the year Eliza married again — Joseph Waltham, a Lincolnshire man and himself an oil-mill labourer — and took the children to Hull, where the master miller's sons grew up warehouse hands and errand boys in the industrial town. The Walthams later went back to Lincolnshire, to Stickney and then Sibsey near Boston, where Eliza died in 1907, in her seventy-seventh year, and was buried at St Margaret's, Sibsey.

Hers is the marriage where two of our lines meet. Through Eliza Stubbs the Marsh-farming Stubbs join the Axholme milling Brocks, and the family's story turns from the Lincolnshire land toward the streets of industrial Hull.

Eliza Stubbs — the join to the Brocks

Research · North Cockerington, Tetney & Hull

Her baptism (North Cockerington, 12 September 1830) fills the one gap Janet Brock's page left, and the 1851 census places her with her parents on the Alvingham farm, read at the image. Her adult life — both marriages, the move to Tetney, widowhood, Hull, and the return to Lincolnshire — is carried in full on Janet's timeline. Still to find (round two): the 1852 marriage register or certificate (Wesleyan chapel, Louth), for both fathers and the witnesses — the document that names the Stubbs–Brock join; the North Cockerington register leaf for her 1830 baptism; and her 1907 Sibsey burial at the image (Janet has the National Burial Index transcript — St Margaret, Sibsey, 19 June 1907).
