James Henry Wilson

1815 – 1888
✓ Validated against records · 2026-07-05

James Henry Wilson — James to everyone, the stone included — was born in Hull and baptised at Sculcoates on the 28th of May 1815, the son of Peter Wilson the blacksmith and Ann Manby. He took the trade one step deeper into the foundry: where his father forged iron, James Henry cast it, an iron moulder, a journeyman at the iron factory, and he was one all his working life. The family stayed on their Sculcoates ground — Cannon Street, then Gibson Street, the very street of Peter's foundry.

On the 2nd of April 1837 he married Ann Whaley at Drypool, both of them young enough that the register notes the marriage was 'by banns with consent of parents' — and both of them signing their names. Across the next quarter-century they raised a great family, thirteen children from William in 1838 to Louisa in 1862, with Thomas — this line's — born in 1850 in the middle of them. Not all were kept: their daughter Emily died at thirteen in 1871, and it is her name, not his, that heads the family stone at St Mary's.

James died at 16 Gibson Street on the 14th of December 1888, the certificate naming the cause in the old phrase for great age, 'decay of nature,' and his son-in-law at the bedside; the stone makes him seventy-three, the certificate seventy-two, and the baptism sides with the stone. His widow Ann followed sixteen months later, in April 1890, at Waterloo Street nearby — and that same year sorrow reached the next generation too, for it was to those same Waterloo Street houses that his son Thomas's wife Clara came home to die that September. The Wilsons had gathered close in Hull, around Gibson Street and Waterloo Street; 1890 took two of their women within five months, and the same doctor signed for both.

  • Baptism — Sculcoates (28 May 1815) — James Henry Wilson, baptised at Sculcoates (St Mary's), 28 May 1815, son of Peter and Ann — findmypast, Yorkshire Baptisms (East Riding Archives, PE46/6, page 98, record GBPRS/YORKSHIRE/BAP/207729452). It confirms the parents Peter Wilson and Ann Manby, and settles the day (Mum's own list once slipped to the 20th). The dataset's label 'All Saints' is anachronistic — All Saints Sculcoates was not built until 1869; the parish in 1815 was St Mary's. from Mum’s research

Research · Hull

James Henry is well-evidenced — baptism, marriage, and the certificate and stone that close his life. The open rung is his wife. Ann Whaley (c.1818–1890) married him at Drypool in 1837 and bore his thirteen children; her own baptism and the Whaley family of Hull are not yet traced. To do: Ann Whaley's baptism c.1818, and the marriage that names her parents.
