Abraham Verity

1798 – 1868
✓ Validated against records · 2026-07-09

Abraham Verity was baptised at Kettlewell, high in Upper Wharfedale, on 18 November 1798 — a son of the village cartwright William Verity and his wife Jane Calvert. He was a cordwainer, a shoemaker, and it was in his lifetime that this family came down out of the Dales.

He married twice. Mary Holliday he married at Otley in 1818, both of full age; he signed the register where she made her mark. Their eldest, Frederick, was baptised up the dale at Burnsall the next year — but the family did not stay in the hills. By the 1820s they were at Bradford, where the younger children were christened, and by 1841 the census finds Abraham a cordwainer at Bridgesfield Row, Leeds, with Mary and four of the children still at home.

Mary died in the 1840s, and in 1850 he married again — Sarah Bentley, at St Philip's, Leeds. That marriage reaches back a generation: it names his father William Verity, cartwright — the man at the head of this line, whom Mum had already read on her copy of the certificate, and whom the parish register confirms at the image. Abraham kept to the shoemaker's bench to the last, at Burley in 1851 with Sarah and a young grandson in the house, and at Baildon in 1861, and died in 1868 in his seventieth year. Above him the record is Mum's wall; but his own hand, on the certificate of 1850, carries the line one generation further — to William the cartwright of Kettlewell.

Research · Kettlewell → Bradford → Leeds

The 1850 Leeds marriage — the record that names his father, William Verity, cartwright — is read at the register image this pass; the 1841 (with Mary Holliday) and 1851 households are read in the Ancestry records; his Kettlewell baptism is confirmed in the FamilySearch family record as a child of William & Jane Calvert. His first marriage (Otley 1818), the 1861 Baildon census and his 1868 death rest on Mum's research. To do: read the Kettlewell baptism leaf itself (NYCRO, offline — an archive visit) for his abode; pin the death and burial of his first wife Mary Holliday (1841×1850 — Mum flags a “Maria Verity” buried at St Paul, Alverthorpe, in 1845, as a candidate only); and trace the grandson James Verity (b.~1846, Leeds) in the 1851 household, most likely daughter Sarah Ann's son.
